When Sophie and Alex got in touch with me a year ago to offer up their gorgeous selves, I knew these images would reflect their true beauty and their authentic love. I knew from the beginning I wanted this elopement to be nothing other than Irish. In my mind there would be whimsy, sun, bright florals, touches of embroidery, frolicking through the long grass of Claregalway Friary's fields...
Then Ireland did what it does; predicted forecasts for horrendous rain and wind. But elopements in Ireland are about rolling with the punches. Sophie, the brilliant little faerie she is, found a friary in Quin I had never heard of before that had coverings to protect us a little bit from the rain. Little did I know this would be a friary that is steeped in history and beauty; moss happily growing through the stones, graves crumbling around us and alcoves for framing soft kisses.
Every image you see here was shot on portra 400, my favorite film stock. I love how every image of Sophie and Alex feels like a painting. It almost felt strange to use new digital photography in such an old place.
Ireland is a place so special to me. Not only is it home to my ancestors, it has always called to me since I was a child. On my latest retreat with stayed on Galway Bay in a little village called Ballyvaughn and by the end knew all the locals and even named the donkeys we passed by on our way to the shops. To have had Sophie and Alex make the treck from England with planes, trains, and cars for this shoot was quite a treat and I am forever grateful for everyone who helped make this shoot come together.
I am always accepting bookings Ireland weddings and elopements if you'd like an American who specializes in the Irish landscape, knows off the beaten path and private locations, includes florals and officiants and provides lush film imagery. Not only that, we laugh our asses off at the pub after...
